Christ and Sabbath Rest

From Sep to Nov 2013, John Alley preached a series of messages in various locations about Christ and Sabbath Rest. Sabbath is a topic not frequently discussed and yet still vitally important to understand. Are we supposed to keep the Sabbath? If so, what exactly is the Sabbath? Why do Christians meet on Sunday? These and many related ideas are discussed in these 8 messages.

Renewing the Mind

Why do our minds need to be renewed? What went wrong to make this renewal necessary? These are the questions posed by Philip Alley at the commencement of his message. Philip explains the way in which God has created mankind to have a body, a soul and a spirit. God breathed His own spirit into Adam, but at the fall the spirit of man died, or became dormant. Philip illustrates from Scripture the way in which, when we are born again of the Spirit, God restores life to our spirit, that part which communes with God.

Power In Your Spirit

These day s we are surrounded by lots of electronic devices which have their place, but are they the cause of many Christians being more “in the mind” than in the Spirit on the Lord’s day – or any other day? John Alley explores the whole subject of the soul and the spirit of man, explaining that while God has breathed His spirit into man, our spirit is dead in sin until such time as we become born again of the Spirit. When we fail to grow and become strong in the Spirit, says John, our spirit is weak and may be bound, preventing us from fully walking with God.

Finding Christ Finding Rest

We read in many places in the Bible about “rest”, or “Sabbath rest”. But what do these terms really mean, and how do we attain rest? John Alley begins this message with Isaiah 58:13-14, which speaks of the importance of not breaking the Sabbath. John goes on to explain that in Old Testament times keeping the Sabbath was a sign of the Covenant. Under the New Covenant, however, even though we are not saved by keeping the Law, nevertheless the principles set out in the Old Covenant are valuable to us.

Christian Freedom and Faith-Rest

In this message John Alley continues on the theme of Sabbath Rest, exploring its depths for Christians under the new covenant. John takes a passage from Hebrews and explores faith rest for God's people. It says "there remains a rest for God's people," but what is that rest? Listen and be drawn closer to Christ as you do.

The Sabbath as a Shadow of Christ

In this message John Alley continues the topic he took up exploring Sabbath Rest for God's people. Is the Sabbath a literal day in the week, a Saturday. Or is it a spiritual sabbath rest, a concept of faith and trust. John Alley takes this topic deeper and reveals the thinking of the early church regarding the Lord's day.

The Law, Grace and Freedom

David Alley commences this first message of a new series by pondering the question of what freedom really means to the Christian. Some people, says David, believe that once they are saved, they are under grace and therefore can act as they please. Others believe that they must observe every last one of the Old Testament laws in order to please God. Both positions, says David, are false and misleading.
