In this video listen to 2 Samuel Chapter 23, read by David Alley, followed by comments and prayer.
In 2 Samuel Chapter 23 we have another psalm to add to the 73 in the book of Psalms. David is not only a significant character, but also a significant writer in scripture. Finally we have here a prophecy, and Acts 2:30 tells us that David was a prophet and we see that in this song, and in others also.
This is a Messianic Song.
After the song we have a list of David’s mighty men, and some of their deeds.
There was a time when David’s hometown, Bethlehem, where Jesus was to be later born, was under Philistine occupation. During the time of Saul’s reign, large sections of Israel ended up under Philistine control. Three of Davi’ds mighty men broke through enemy lines to get David water from the well at Bethlehem. This story probably happened when Saul was the king.
Also here we have mentioned Bathsheba’s father and grandfather, and here Bathsheba’s husband Uriah.
The whole thing of mighty men is an example of discipleship. In the NT Christ called people to follow him, and he had 12, but also had 72. These became well known all through church history. Here in the OT we have the same type of thing. Whoever you follow, you will become like. Its a reminder to leadership to be what you want your followers to become, and a reminder to disciples to follow the one God has placed in your life. This isn’t only about academics, or mental things, but about attitudes, of the heart, about having sonship in the heart.
