The Modus Operandi of Christ

When the apostle John observed the empty tomb of Christ, he recognized something of Christ and believed. He believed without seeing Christ, but believed on evidence. We too have the work of Christ in our lives, and like John can see and believe based on his handiwork. Have you learned to recognise the MO of the Lord in the dealings of your life?

Implications of the Resurrection

When the early church shared the gospel, the resurrection of Christ was a key component. You won't find an example in the Bible where it was left out. But what about our gospel sharing? Emmaus

Philip Alley explores the topic of disappointment – what causes it and how to deal with it. In the story of Cleopas and his companion on the road to Emmaus, their disappointment in the events surrounding the crucifixion of Christ has blinded them in a sense, so that they did not recognise Jesus when he came to them on the road and walked with them. If our expectations are wrong, says Philip, then we can even be disappointed by God because of our limited perceptions. When dreams appear to have shattered, we become like Cleopas, unable in that moment to recognise the presence and the hand of God. Philip gives some possible reasons why our dreams may appear to have crumbled before giving several pointers on dealing with disappointment in our lives. Disappointment, says Philip, does not make our task of reaching family and friends for Christ go away. Our honest testimony will be exactly what somebody needs to hear.

Jesus is Calling Believe

Michael Appleton begins this composite message with passages from Romans 4 and John 20. Michael speaks of the power of the resurrected Christ for those who believe, and goes on to speak of appearances recorded in Scripture. It was when He called Mary Magdalene by name that her eyes were opened, says Michael, and today Jesus is calling the name of each of us. Will we hear and recognise the risen Christ? Jonathan Maxwell continues the message, speaking of those times when we ask, “Jesus, where are you now?” Our experience, says Jonathan, does not negate the truth of what Jesus said and promised. Jonathan examines several Scripture verses that illustrate that Jesus is the resurrection and that He will do what He said. Jonathan concludes with an exhortation to believe - and we will see the glory of God.

Finding Christ Finding Rest

We read in many places in the Bible about “rest”, or “Sabbath rest”. But what do these terms really mean, and how do we attain rest? John Alley begins this message with Isaiah 58:13-14, which speaks of the importance of not breaking the Sabbath. John goes on to explain that in Old Testament times keeping the Sabbath was a sign of the Covenant. Under the New Covenant, however, even though we are not saved by keeping the Law, nevertheless the principles set out in the Old Covenant are valuable to us. The sign of the New Covenant, says John, is the resurrection of Christ – Christ died, Christ rose and Christ is coming again. And so will we who keep His Covenant. John continues to teach of the benefits of keeping the principles that have been set out for us in Scripture, and then examines passages from Hebrews and from Revelation, which not only emphasise the meaningful nature of the Lord’s Day, but also present symbolic picture of the person of Christ. The rich symbolism, including the illustration of the two-edged sword which issues from the mouth of Christ are spoken of in some detail by John, who then goes on to warn against those things which prevent us from attaining to the Sabbath rest that Christ offers. These include unbelief, disobedience and failure to rest from our own works. John explains how criticism of others is actually a failure to rest from our own works. The call of Christ, says John, is that we yield to His mercies – to come to the cross, to seek His face, and to surrender everything to Him.

Finding Resurrection Life

Continuing in the vein of examining what Jesus has done for us in His death on the cross and glorious resurrection, Lloyd Gill speaks powerfully on the subject of the victory to be found in understanding the resurrection of Christ. Lloyd states that the inability of death to hold Jesus shows the totality of His victory, and exhorts the listener to seek the spirit of wisdom and understanding, as described in the first chapter of Ephesians. Using this and several other passages of Scripture, Lloyd explains that it is only by possessing this understanding we may walk in the full benefits of the resurrection of Christ.
