christ

When Mary was told she would be with child, and this baby was to be none other than God, she was curious how this would happen. She was told she would become pregnant via the Holy Spirit's power. From that time she carried the Christ within her.

In Ephesians 4:13 it states "This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God's son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ." (NLV)

What is going to continue? The previous verses tell us, it is the giving of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. These are the gifts of grace given to the Body of Christ in Christ's ascension. These are not given before Jesus ascended, but in his ascension, that is while he is seated at the Father's right hand in heaven.

The Modus Operandi of Christ

When the apostle John observed the empty tomb of Christ, he recognized something of Christ and believed. He believed without seeing Christ, but believed on evidence. We too have the work of Christ in our lives, and like John can see and believe based on his handiwork. Have you learned to recognise the MO of the Lord in the dealings of your life?

As a young pastor in Mt Morgan struggling for converts I receive wise advise from a traveling evangelist. He told me “it is God who builds the church,” and advised me to pray for God to take His place as builder.

I began praying daily the prayer that “God would build His Church, and the gates of Hell would not prevail.” An astounding thing happened that year – the church grew by 400%, and the amazement was compounded by the fact that prayer was my only evangelism strategy that year.

Complete Surrender

John Alley speaks of the nature of Jesus, who was fully and properly man at the same time that he was fully and properly God. John describes in detail the historical deliberations of the Church elders on this subject and the origin of the Nicene Creed that we know today. The human race, explains John, owed a great debt of sin. Spiritual law demands that debts must be paid. God could not pay the price in the person of God, and so in order to carry out His plan of redemption He had to find a man who was sinless and who could pay the debt. In the person of Jesus, God became man and lived amongst us. John explains this reality in wonderful clarity and then challenges the listener to consider that although we might believe in Jesus, and may have prayed for forgiveness of our sins, unless we are surrendered to the lordship of Christ, the cross has no power for us. We must come to the place where we fully surrender our lives to Him.

The Everlasting Covenant

In this Good Friday message from Easter 2016, John Alley talks about the Everlasting Covenant. Beginning with an explanation of what covenant is, using biblical examples, John goes on to show how all of these covenants were in the context of one bigger everlasting covenant. This is the Covenant of Peace. That covenant was made in the blood of Jesus Christ, established before time began, as scripture attests. From this eternal covenant, which is pre-dates Adam, all of His promises, and all good things are possible, and come to us.

In His Steps

What does it mean to be a follower of Christ? What is a disciple? Does being a Christian change the way I behave? These are some of the questions with which Philip Alley commences his message, also making reference to a well known Christian book from which he chosen title is derived. Philip goes on to discuss Scripture verses from the book of Luke which speak of daily taking up our cross and denying self. Every day we must choose to live differently, following Christ’s example. Growth comes through people and through pain, says Philip. The influence of others can encourage growth is we will allow it to, as will the pain that comes through living in a broken world. Sometimes, says Philip, pain comes in conjunction with people and sometimes that pain is deliberately caused. This is especially difficult when the people are close to us. But Jesus’ own people hated him and killed him – yet he did not retaliate. Philip closes with the thought that we are saved because of Jesus’ silence, and a question. Will our silence in the face of suffering convict others?
