Jesus is Calling Believe

Michael Appleton begins this composite message with passages from Romans 4 and John 20. Michael speaks of the power of the resurrected Christ for those who believe, and goes on to speak of appearances recorded in Scripture. It was when He called Mary Magdalene by name that her eyes were opened, says Michael, and today Jesus is calling the name of each of us. Will we hear and recognise the risen Christ? Jonathan Maxwell continues the message, speaking of those times when we ask, “Jesus, where are you now?” Our experience, says Jonathan, does not negate the truth of what Jesus said and promised. Jonathan examines several Scripture verses that illustrate that Jesus is the resurrection and that He will do what He said. Jonathan concludes with an exhortation to believe - and we will see the glory of God.

Good Works & Dead Works

John Alley begins this message with 5 points from his previous messages about the purpose of the Lord’s Day. The final of these points was that there is a spiritual experience of Christ that we are meant to walk in – faith rest. John goes on to present a simple yet profound comparison between good works, which come from a place of rest, and dead works, which come from human striving. These two different types of works, says John, begin with and are classified by what we believe, who we believe, and in what (or whom) we put our trust. Dead works are of the flesh and lead only to death, while good works are what we were created for and were prepared or us from the beginning of time. And yet, says John, often our works are a mixture of both. John gives helpful illustrations of the heart motives that could be at the heart of two people doing identical works, both of which in themselves seem good and have good outcomes. If we do things to obtain righteousness, then our works are dead. God will give righteousness as a grace gift, but not if strive to be “worthy” of the gift. John presents several verses of Scripture. To illustrate good works, John brings verses from Ephesians 2 and Philippians 2 and then to warn against dead works he brings verses from Hebrews6 and 9 and John 6. John concludes this inspiring message with words from the apostle Paul, who spoke of building with gold, silver and precious stones or wood, hay and stubble.

What Must I Do To Be Saved

David Hood begins this message with a reading from Acts 16, where the question is asked, “What must I do to be saved?” The reply, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved……” raises the question of what it really means to believe. David takes the listener on a journey commencing with the understanding, as in John 1:1, that Jesus is the Word, the logos of God. Drawing on the articles of faith as examples of the real impact this should have on our lives, David explores Scriptures in the books of Romans, Luke and John as well as many other references. David points out that being Christians, we are meant to represent Christ, bringing life and hope while speaking the Word in love – but since Jesus did not come to judge or condemn (John 3:17) neither should we judge or condemn others. Jesus instructs us to love one another just as He has loved us, but in our own strength we cannot successfully do this. We are meant to humble ourselves and ask for his help and his grace to live as his representatives in the earth. David draws his message to a conclusion with the challenging thought that denial of the Word of God is denial of Christ, just as the Word without love, compassion and grace is not the Word of God.
