Spiritual Warfare 101

The basics of spiritual warfare are being aware that we have an enemy, and knowing how to pray and resist. It is less scary than we think, and yet we must be aware of His schemes. As Eve was deceived with what seemed plausible, so spiritual warfare is waged against God's people in ways that fit in our understanding. Jesus Christ when tempted resisted Satan because He knew the scripture. This sermon takes us to the starting place of spiritual warfare, which is prayer, scripture, and not looking at people as the problem.

Rejoice Not In This

John Alley examines the proper balance to be found in walking with God while being alert to the need for spiritual warfare. Beginning his message with a story to illustrate his point, John emphasises that while problems do crop up, we deal with the problem without our emphasis changing from a clear focus on Christ and His will. “I know who I am, and who I belong to. This is my big picture” says John. When a matter for spiritual warfare occurs, it must be dealt with, but it does not change the big picture. John emphasises the importance of being a worshipper and of following the commands that Jesus gave in the Gospels. These, says John, are our key to victory in warfare. John goes on to bring several Scripture references including Luke 10:18-20 in which Jesus says “…do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” Following John’s message, David Hood shares some experiences in this vein, encouraging the listeners to praise and worship at every opportunity.

A Life Surrendered

Today John Alley commences his message with an excerpt from “Binding the Strong Man over America” by John Benefield. This inspiring passage tells a story of dramatic change to a region of Oklahoma in the wake of extensive Prayer, spiritual mapping and spiritual warfare and emphasises the fact that spiritual forces are very much at work in the world about us. John then goes on to examine Isaiah 40:6-8, which compares man to the grass of the field which is here today and withers tomorrow before proclaiming that the world of God stands forever. John goes on to remind the listener that life is temporary, a short period in which to decide whether we love life and therefore love the Lord, or hate life and therefore hate Christ. We can fall on the stone and be broken, says John, or it will fall on us and crush us. The choices we make here and now determine our eternity. The outer man is perishing and decaying moment by moment, but for those who have Christ, there is great joy and peace inside. John goes on to examine Scriptures from 1 Peter 1:22-25 and from Psalm 103, all of which reiterate the theme of the temporary nature of earthly life alongside the eternal truth that lives forever in those who believe. Where else can we find such hope? In John’s words, we cannot. In these days leading up to the annual Summit, John exhorts the people of God to empty ourselves of all that is of “self” and repent of every wickedness so that we can receive all that the Holy Spirit desires to impart.

The Times In Which We Live 3

John Alley begins this week’s message by reflecting on what it means to live a blameless life, and the fact that none of us can really claim to have done so. He then goes on to speak of the urgency of prayer for our city/region, emphasizing the essential aspects of humility and repentance. In order to successfully pray an intercessory prayer, says John, we must identify with the city/region/people for whom we are praying, repenting of the sins of the people as if they were our own sins. This is true even if we ourselves have never committed those sins. We must press in boldly in prayer. Satan has blinded the eyes of unbelievers, says John, before reminding the listener that according to the word of God, Satan is overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony.

The Times In Which We Live

John Alley begins his message today with responsive reading of a passage from Ephesians 4:29 to 5:21. He then goes on to tell the story of a city that he once visited and the effect of the secret sin of a Christian leader in that place. John speaks extensively of the great need of all of us to walk in the counsel of God and to guard ourselves against falling into the ways of the world. John closes by exhorting the listeners to be prayerful and to practice listening prayer, as God has taught us in the past.
