The Path of Righteousness #3 - Self Control

David Alley takes up the thread of the series focussing on righteousness in this third part. Righteousness, says David, is a gift to us at the time of salvation, however there then begins the journey of sanctification, or becoming righteous. And a large part of this process has to do with self control – that decision not to give in to every whim of personal wants, choosing to follow instead the path of righteousness set out for us by our Saviour. How is it possible to learn self control? David refers to many Scripture verses as he draws the listener to the conclusion that we do not attain self control by our own attempts, trying hard to do what is right. Rather, the attainment of self control comes from God in the form of one of the fruits of the Spirit. We all, says David, have things in our hearts that the enemy can use to tempt us – therefore we need to change what is in our hearts. David concludes his message by reflecting that just as righteousness is a gift from God, so too is self control.

The Path of Righteousness #2

Feeling a deep conviction that many Christians today, especially younger generations, have no strong sense of the need for personal holiness and have never sat under extensive teaching on righteousness, and knowing the extensive call of God in Holy Scripture to uprightness before God, and that this is the vital gift of God, John Alley here brings scriptural truth to life. Beginning again with the fascinating account in Acts 24 of Paul's trial before Felix, where, as "Paul talked about righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid," and then discussing John Wesley's famous sermon "Christ our Wisdom, Righteousness, Holiness, and Redemption," John provides a comprehensive overview of what the Bible says about righteousness and its importance and blessing in the life of the redeemed, along with some excellent personal examples of growing in righteousness in God's eyes.

The Place of Aggressive Prayer

Following on from the previous 2 messages by David Alley on the subject of prayer, John Alley begins by affirming that some of the requirements for answered prayer include humility, appreciation of God and care for others. John goes on to teach of the need for aggressive prayer. Beginning with a passage from Acts 12 and moving on to 2 Corinthians 10:3-6, John shares many stories of the effectiveness of aggression in prayer, while at the same time emphasizing that this aggressive prayer must be offered with a right heart. These stories range from personal experience to the example of Scripture, and also include a powerful testimony taken from a book by Greg Crawford. This message inspires the listener to pray and believe God with passion.

What Must I Do To Be Saved

David Hood begins this message with a reading from Acts 16, where the question is asked, “What must I do to be saved?” The reply, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved……” raises the question of what it really means to believe. David takes the listener on a journey commencing with the understanding, as in John 1:1, that Jesus is the Word, the logos of God. Drawing on the articles of faith as examples of the real impact this should have on our lives, David explores Scriptures in the books of Romans, Luke and John as well as many other references. David points out that being Christians, we are meant to represent Christ, bringing life and hope while speaking the Word in love – but since Jesus did not come to judge or condemn (John 3:17) neither should we judge or condemn others. Jesus instructs us to love one another just as He has loved us, but in our own strength we cannot successfully do this. We are meant to humble ourselves and ask for his help and his grace to live as his representatives in the earth. David draws his message to a conclusion with the challenging thought that denial of the Word of God is denial of Christ, just as the Word without love, compassion and grace is not the Word of God.
