Being a Real Man 2 - The Call of Duty

Philip Alley resumes his series on the subject of God’s pattern for manhood with numerous practical things that men do and do not do. Interspersed with Scripture verses, Philip centres in on the theme of the responsibility of manhood and the way in which many choose to steer clear of that responsibility. Real men do not, says Philip, avoid the truth or blame others for their own shortcomings. Rather, they work and provide for their families, they take responsibility for their health and fitness, they choose their friends wisely and they serve the Lord, refusing to adopt the worldly values and actions seen all around. These and many other practical pointers make this a message rich with wisdom.

Wonderful Bible Chronology

This message by John Alley explores and uncovers some of the wonderful truths of Bible chronology. John shows from Scripture that the Bible teaches of an un broken timeline, beginning with Adam right through to the last Adam, Jesus Christ. There are genealogical details for many family lines, and yet the only one of those which includes details of time and years (chronology) is that which traces from Adam to Jesus – and often not through the first-born son of a particular man in this genealogical line. This message serves to confirm that Adam, as all the others named in the family line of Jesus, was a real man. John concludes his detail with four statements:

  1. The God who worked out the intricate telling of history in the Scriptures certainly watches over those who are in Christ, the second Adam.
  2. The same God who chose the patriarchs chose each one of us.
  3. The same God who went ahead of those men also goes ahead of each of us.
  4. There is a God at work in history.

Vehement Prayer

John Alley’s message once again follows the thread of messages on the subject of prayer. John gives a brief overview of the previous messages this year, which have been about prayer, with different emphases each time. John calls a “panel’ from the congregation, and then poses several questions around the nature of prayer that is required for various dire situations. Continuing to pray desperately when we cannot find God, says John, is in fact wrestling with god. And just as Jacob came out of his night of wrestling with God a changed man, so we too will be changed when we engage God in this manner. John speaks of the need to stick with it, no matter how weary we become or how repetitious it seems, as well as of the need to have the support of others in prayer when we are unable to stand alone. There is a spiritual maturity that we can grow into, says John, where we are able to be in the Spirit at all times. John brings his message to a conclusion by discussing the nature of vehement prayer – that ardent, fervent and passionate prayer that is the very opposite of moderate, lukewarm, half-hearted prayer. This, says John, is the Bible picture of how we should pray.

A Glimpse Into Sonship

This message by Philip Alley takes a look through the Scriptures to discover what it really means to be a son to a father. Sonship, says Philip, changes the way we live. And just as we must submit to God in order to be saved, so we should also submit our lives to another -- by serving that other and by giving up our own lives and agendas, In this way, says Philip, we will grow up into maturity. Philip also refers to the way in which Isaac opened up the wells of his fathers -- just as we should attend to the business of our spiritual fathers.

Things to Walk In

John Alley speaks today on a number of subjects, each of which involves a value that needs to be in our lives so that we walk in those things today, right now. The first is that we need to live lives where we declare the truth in every situation and then proclaim what will happen. John emphasises that we must seek God in order to obtain His promises before turning to the need to be vitally involved in the work of Christ in the earth – our heavenly reward depends on it! We also need to be committed to tithing and to giving as well as being active in sharing our faith. John brings his message to a close by speaking of the lives of Levi and Simeon in the book of Genesis. Both brothers were under s curse, and yet Levi’s stand for the Lord at a later date turned the curse around so that Levi was blessed. Simeon, on the other hand, did not respond to the Lord in the same way and the outcome of his life was very mixed. John reminds the listener that when we take a stand for the Lord, He turns all things around for our good, to bless us.

Eat my Dust

God was the first person to say "Eat my Dust," and it was spoken to the snake in the Garden of Eden. Christ triumphed mightily over the enemy on the cross and in this message John Alley follows a large trail of references to Christ's triumph and many other references to Satan being in the dust. John discusses the Roman concept of a Triumphal Procession after victory. This involved displaying the captives through the streets of Rome, a procedure that often took days. At various places along the way various enemies were publicly disgraced and killed. The Bible equates Christs victory as "triumph." The devil has been humiliated. However believers often have limited understanding, and the devil is a deceiver and so he still has power in our lives to influence us. This message helps us see a bigger picture of our place. It culminates in a reference to Satan being placed "under our feet." Finally the devil's humiliation is worse than before, because now the children of God has authority over him. This is a powerful message and one that will get you thinking, praying and believing that more is possible.

Never Give Up On The Goal In Mind

Philip Alley brings a message of encouragement to persevere in doing what we believe that God has called us to. Philip speaks of several reasons why people give up, giving Bible examples of those who persevered and eventually saw the outcome that God had promised. These include the passing of time without visible result, with a great example being the perseverance of Joseph. Joseph waited many years and endured many things but did not give up on the calling of God. Philip also speaks of pressures to conform to the culture of the day, citing Noah who built an ark and Daniel along with his 3 friends who defied the decree of the king and worshipped God, refusing to bow down to any other. The third area of difficulty that Philip names is the action of opponents to our course of action and our values. Nehemiah and Joshua both faced great opposition in carrying out God’s work, yet they overcame. This message will refresh hope and determination to persevere in the call of God.
