Being A Man #1 - What is a Real Man?

Philip Alley begins the first message of this series on the theme of being a real man with this message. Exploring the Bible for God’s description of what makes and defines a man, Philip shares many verses of Scripture which illustrate clearly the difference between popular culture’s ideal of manhood and God’s design for men. A real man, says Philip, does not compromise the convictions he holds true. Neither does he steer clear of responsibility, clinging to a life of immaturity. A man controls his emotions and passions, works, provides for and protects his family, serving and leading them while he follows God’s design for masculinity. Philip speaks of macho-ism and the “Peter Pan Syndrome”, where people shun responsibility and refuse to mature, and contrasts these with the design of God for manhood.

Christs Messianic Reign in 4 Psalms

This message by John Alley explores the question as to when Jesus began to rule and reign as Messiah on David's throne. John presents many Scripture verses from the New Testament which all point to the fact that as soon as Jesus was resurrected, he was given all authority and power -- in short, Jesus ruled at the right hand of God from that very time. John then goes on to draw strong parallels between Daniel's revelation (Dan 7:13) and Revelation 5:1-10, both of which indicate that Jesus, once slain, rose again and was found worthy to open the scroll and to reign. John then goes on to quote four Psalms: Ps 2, Ps 22, Ps 72 and Ps 110, which also strongly reveal the rule and reign of Christ.

The Law, Grace and Freedom

David Alley commences this first message of a new series by pondering the question of what freedom really means to the Christian. Some people, says David, believe that once they are saved, they are under grace and therefore can act as they please. Others believe that they must observe every last one of the Old Testament laws in order to please God. Both positions, says David, are false and misleading. David goes on to illustrate from Scripture that the man who meditates (takes notice) on God’s law is blessed, while the one who goes his own way will perish. So what does it mean for the Christian to be free? David explains that we have all been found guilty of sins, and the debt we owe is more than any man could ever repay. However, by a miracle God’s own Son, Jesus, has paid our debt in full and we are free, but not free to do as we wish. Instead, we obey God out of love and gratitude for what He has done for us. God has released us from the consequences of our sin and has also give us power to overcome sin and live a life pleasing to Him.

A Life Surrendered

Today John Alley commences his message with an excerpt from “Binding the Strong Man over America” by John Benefield. This inspiring passage tells a story of dramatic change to a region of Oklahoma in the wake of extensive Prayer, spiritual mapping and spiritual warfare and emphasises the fact that spiritual forces are very much at work in the world about us. John then goes on to examine Isaiah 40:6-8, which compares man to the grass of the field which is here today and withers tomorrow before proclaiming that the world of God stands forever. John goes on to remind the listener that life is temporary, a short period in which to decide whether we love life and therefore love the Lord, or hate life and therefore hate Christ. We can fall on the stone and be broken, says John, or it will fall on us and crush us. The choices we make here and now determine our eternity. The outer man is perishing and decaying moment by moment, but for those who have Christ, there is great joy and peace inside. John goes on to examine Scriptures from 1 Peter 1:22-25 and from Psalm 103, all of which reiterate the theme of the temporary nature of earthly life alongside the eternal truth that lives forever in those who believe. Where else can we find such hope? In John’s words, we cannot. In these days leading up to the annual Summit, John exhorts the people of God to empty ourselves of all that is of “self” and repent of every wickedness so that we can receive all that the Holy Spirit desires to impart.

We need GOD, GOD needs us

Michael Appleton begins today’s message with illustrations from Psalm 127 of the futility of human effort without the hand of God being upon it. Michael goes on to explain that while we need God, God also needs us. God has instructed us to go and make disciples of all nations. God will listen to the humble prayer of one person, says Michael, but there is great power in the combined prayers of many.

Michael then goes on to emphasise that while our Senior Minister John Alley has an apostolic call on his life, so do we have a call to be an apostolic people and to push the victory home through the power of prayer.
