10 Sep Why We Change But God Doesn’t
The Bible tell us that ‘Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.’ Hebrews 13:8. And later in the Old Testament we have God saying, ‘I am the Lord, I do not change.’ Malachi 3:6 One of the attributes of God in theology is his unumutable nature, that is he does not change, and in fact is in capable of being changed.
In what seems a contrasting, statement, God is also recorded in the prophet Isaiah as saying, ‘Behold, I am doing a new thing.’ Isaiah 43:19. Is God changing, or acting differently to before?
The answer to these apparent two different perspectives is simple. What God chooses to do, and who God is are not the same thing. God himself doesn’t change, but how He chooses to act can change. The reason for the difference in how He acts is his response to the people He is dealing with… us.
Parents experience a similar thing in dealing with their children. No two children, twins included, are exactly the same. This being the case, the same parent may respond in different ways to their children, depending on who they are. On child who is lazy will be encouraged to work. Another child who is a workaholic will be encouraged to rest. The Lord is like this too.
But there is also another perspective, and this has to do with the infinitely creative nature of God. Because He is creative, and because he is infinite and has no end, there is no stopping the endless new things He does. So in other words, the Lord is always doing new things, and that feature of Him, will never change.
This video has some extended thoughts.
