25 Aug Did Jesus Sing a Song?
Matthew’s gospel records that while concluding the last supper, Jesus and the disciples sang a hymn.
‘Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.’ – Matt 26:27-30
So that answers at least one question, did Jesus ever sing? Yes of course he sung, because he was born into a Jewish family, and music is a part of the worship of the Lord. But there is another question. What was the song that Jesus sang?
A great many people believe that Jesus and his disciples sang words from Psalm 118 that very night, because it is a part of the traditional conclusion to the Passover celebration. If that be so, then Jesus sang the following words.
The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me? – Psalm 118:6
What a powerful and wonderful reminder of God’s grace in a time when Jesus was just hours away from the beginning of his ordeal. His betrayal by Judas, his trial with Pilate, and his death at the cross, all at the hands of man. But Jesus knew, and had only just been singing, what can mere mortals do to me?
But those were not the only words that Jesus sang.
Shouts of joy and victory
resound in the tents of the righteous:
“The Lord’s right hand has done mighty things! – Psalm 118:15
In going to the cross, Jesus was not only going to make redemption for the sins of all humanity, but also defeat the evil one and his schemes completely. He was indeed going to do might things, and fill the tents of the righteous with shouts of victory.
But there is more.
I will not die but live,
and will proclaim what the Lord has done.
The Lord has chastened me severely,
but he has not given me over to death. – Psalm 118:17-18
Jesus was singing of his own resurrection in the hours before his death.
And finally
The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes.
The Lord has done it this very day;
let us rejoice today and be glad. – Psalm 118:22-24
Jesus himself was the stone that was rejected, but this very day he was to become the cornerstone.
Amazing!!!
