17 Nov How Did God Get There?
A few years ago while working on the house, one of my young children approached me and asked, ‘Who made God?’
When you have a six year old asking questions like that, its a sign of intelligence.
He wasn’t asking because he was trying to prove the existence of God. No, he was trying to understand the genuine existence of God. It was a really good question.
We know instinctively that nothing can exist on its own, everything in our life tell us that. So how did God get there? Something must have made him, right? But then, what made that thing? And what made the thing that made that thing?
It’s a question that can retreat into infinity.
I explained to him the dilemma of always having to ask the “who made that” question.
The reality is that we are here. The world is here. The universe is here. For that to be the case there HAD to be something that was not created, or otherwise nothing would exist.
And so we have the God, the Lord Almighty, the Uncreated One.
This is why when he revealed his name to Moses it was “I Am.” The self-existent one.
Sometimes scientists who are aware of this need for an eternal reality, propose that the Universe always existed. They call it the steady-state universe theory. But the problem is that the Universe is not intelligent, and is also made of the same ‘substance’ that everything we see around us is made of. The universe is physical.
But God is intelligent, he had the will to create, which also makes him personal. And he is not physical, which means he didn’t need to have a beginning and and end like all physical things do.
God isn’t created, because God is eternal, he is everlasting. The Bible speaks to his qualities that are far above human understanding. And he created the earth and all we see because He had the intelligence, the heart, and the ability to do so.
So the intelligence shown by my six year old at the time, by asking such a thoughtful question, was a sign of a much greater intelligence the was present before the beginning of the Universe.
Thank God!!
